Tuesday: Content and Consistency

Quote: “Consistency is hardest when no one is clapping for you.”

There’s a funny thing that happens when you practice and perform.  There’s a moment people clap for you.

I was a competitive baton twirler for 17 years.

That’s a long time to do anything… but to stick with a sport and compete for almost two decades, yikes.  That’s a heck of a lot of alone time in a gym.  Alone time spent getting hit in the head, chin, elbow… let’s just say getting hit in your funny bone is not funny.  But the worse is getting hit behind your ear.  Still makes me wince.

But enough about that.

The clapping… let’s get to the clapping.

It’s fun to end your performance and have a crowd clap.  But that’s kind of what they have to do… right?  Come on, admit it.  You’ve been to performances of your kids, or friends with kids, and you’re like, “um that kinda sucked but I’ll clap because that’s what we do”

Then there’s actually appreciative clapping.  It is fun to be “mid routine” and have an audience appreciate the difficulty or surprise element of what you do to spontaneously clap.  Seriously, it’s cool.

You know what’s even better?

When your peers recognize it.  I competed nationally.  And one time, ONE time… I was actually recognized for a trick by the crowd of my peers.  That was beyond cool, still makes me pretty grateful.

Why am I telling you this?

Well, clap for people.  It’s a simple gesture on your part that means a heck of a lot to the person on stage that’s spent countless hours to get to the point of performing for you.

But more important is that YOU put in the countless hours on your talent driving your business so someday maybe someone will clap for you.

You are at your business, working hard, sun up to sun down, every day… right?  You put your heart and soul into what you do and rarely does anyone clap.  (I mean have you ever clapped for your dentist after a tooth cleaning?  I doubt it.)

Realize that you won’t hear clapping from anyone for doing your job – but you just might get some praise, and extra smile, or a warm feeling from going above and beyond.

This is when your tribe will bond with you — that bond is “clapping”.  They like you. They appreciate you.  They trust you.  This comes from the hours you put into your business AND from sharing the journey with them through your content in emails and posts.

Content is important… it might not feel like it as you create it, but there’s a lot of silent clapping that goes on when people read it.

PS:  Your task for today is to give someone else a silent clap simply by recognizing their efforts.  For example: I was at a sandwich line the other day and the vegetables, meats, and sauces were organized to perfection.  I’m seriously they were beautiful… and it’s “just” a sandwich line… but I made a remark of how someone put a lot of effort in to the display.

The person who did it was making my sandwich.  Dang… I got an ear to ear grin!

All I’m saying is quit being silent with your clapping and start recognizing the effort others are doing for you.  Pretty soon you’ll hear the clapping for your efforts, too!
