Tuesday: Content and Consistency
Quote: “Stepping out of your comfort zone and trying new things is the best way to grow.”
OK, this is a bizarre content & consistency post… I’m breaking pattern because I wanted to share my experience yesterday. But I promise, I’ll get to a point that is useful!
I went on a quest to buy pickled herring. If you know what Pickled Herring is… uff da, you’ve gotta be Norwegian.
Pickled Herring something I can’t stand the smell of, let alone eat… but there I was looking to purchase it.
It was also torture to buy it because it was 12/23 and I typically adhere to a rule of NEVER going to a store 3 days before Christmas and 2 days after Christmas…
Why deal with the frustration.
But there I was: tired, annoyed, cranky, and seriously pissed off.
Having ZERO idea where to look… and dodging “mommies” with packs of frozen vegetables skidding off their carts, I started texting ANYONE for help, my actual text, “It’s a complete sh*t show here… where the F do I find Pickled Herring?” Just note… my actual text was not edited… and had a few other choice words inserted, too.
No sooner did I press send, that I turned around to find this lovely “grandma” type woman wearing a kerchief. And I can’t make this up… on her apron it read “Holiday Helper” and she was carrying a tray of cookies in front of her outstretched with both hands. It was “floating” and they were chocolate chip!
I was SOOOOOO confused.
“Oh Dear… how can I help you?” she said in this sweet crackling voice”.
Where the crap did she come from? I actually looked around to see if there were TV cameras somewhere.
I mean – if you’ve read my blog before… I love chocolate chip cookies. And there was a whole magic floating tray of chocolate chip cookies coming my way…
This totally boggled my mind.
The only thing missing was the sound of harps from this angel.
But seriously… WTF?
Well… this store, knew it was going to be busy so they had these ambassadors with cookies to help you find what you needed.
Did I find Pickled Herring… not really, she brought me to herring – but after that 4 other employees, shouting to each other – “She’s Looking For Pickled Herring” – which they may as well have yelled, “She needs ______!” (fill in your favorite personal aid product) helped me walk about 50 miles to the location.
When we finally found Pickled Herring display – the entire shelf was EMPTY. There are lots of Norwegians in this town.
I needed to go to 4 different grocery stores to find the treasure, but I did finally find it.
So what does this have to do with anything…
Later in the day, I told our Office Manager about cookie grandma, I was still griping – and he said in this light bulb of inspiration voice, “Holiday Helper… that’s a fantastic idea – we should do that on the 4th of July at the marina – but instead of cookies they should have a tray of slushies”
He actually wants to get rid of the cookies.
What is wrong with him?
COOKIES!
But yes, it is a great idea. When you know you’ll have a high pressure day, plan ahead, bring in extra people to help your customers have a quality experience.
Your website needs this too… put grandma with cookies somewhere on the page, meaning – make sure your search box is clearly visible or that you have a “click here” feature to get help navigating your site…
OR my favorite – put your phone number, right in the mast of your website. Often I visit a website just for a phone number to call someone.
Make sure your content is easy to find and easy to use… Install a cookie grandma where you can!
