“Whatever we accomplish is due to the combined effort.”- Walt Disney
Summer is drawing to a close at the marina… but we are far from closed! Well, we never actually close, but… our floor traffic significantly reduces.
Today I was making the schedule through Labor Day and I realized just how much we accomplished this year.
And I mean “WE”
Last year at this time we were “thin” on our crew. We had a few bad hires in the previous year and a lousy spring recruitment that decimated the group to 4.
This year… we’re much better. We are stable with a fall crew of 10. My overall crew is about 25. We have a nice team mentality started that we can build from and next year is going to be amazing!
The reason I bring this up is because of a conversation I had with my one crew member.
He just finished his last shift… he leaves for his first day of college tomorrow! He started at age 14, so he’s one of the main leaders. So… before he left, I said thank you to him for all of his help and leadership over the summer. All of our crew really worked hard to build a wonderful crew that is hard working and fun. But he in particular was key to the success.
Back in April I had a conversation with him about what my overall vision/plan was… and really, I let he and his two other high school seniors build our team. This started with the spring recruitment party. It was the first one we did… and granted, I still feel 18 on the inside, my gray hair kinda spills my secret. So I stepped back and let them take the lead by building relationships with prospective crew members.
Then they did it with training.
Then they did it with retention.
It was a leap of faith but my advice in regards to today’s inspiration… regardless of age, utilize the skills of those that surround you, and you will be pleasantly surprised.
So today on his way out the door he said, “are you happy with the crew?”
Now remember I was deep in the 3 hour scheduling process, I was tired and annoyed at everyone’s “I have practice” “I’m going out of town” “I’m doing anything but going to be at work” requests… and HE took me by surprise. Rarely does a supervisor get directly asked such an important question of affirmation.
My answer… “YES” – They did an amazing job. I went on to explain in detail… but a resounding yes.
Now the fun starts… it’s a new crew, the “old crew” is gone (at school) but if history repeats itself, the growth will amaze as they “step up” into their new roles!
As you’re going through today… look for those golden “we” opportunities and share your celebration!
