Oh My. Here’s my pet peeve of the day.
“Could you just make an exception”
If you want to have a business, you need to remain consistent in your policies and procedures.
When you change your rules you will find yourself in trouble. If you give a discount today… If you take off a finance fee… if you do ANYTHING outside of your norm you will run into the “last time you did… the last time I could… Why? You did it last time” song and dance.
Today I had three such “couldn’t you just make an exception” scenarios. It annoys me so much. Sure it’s easy to say, “yes” we’ll let you out of your contract. Yes, we’ll let you adjust your time. Yes… fill in the blank. But what happens when you do it for one person and you “hold firm” for another… better yet, if you do this for one person or situation and not another… can a case be made that you discriminated? I’m not saying you did… I’m just saying, what do the optics look like?
Kinda adds a whole new dimension to your easy “yes” answer, right?
Just a friendly little reminder to remain consistent.
