Thursday: Infinity Customer
Do you remember being in school and your football team reached the end of the season… you had a great team they won a lot, in fact, they qualified for regionals… Then a year passes and the team starts playing again and they picked up where they left off playing for the regional championship, right?
WRONG.
The next year they start over.
This is exactly the same thing you have with your customers. You might have a wonderful experience with a customer and the next one hates you.
Often I have this conversation, and I learned it working in college admissions, but I won’t say bad things about our competition. I had a customer a week ago tell me how awful our competitor is… well, not even the competitor, the actual owner… who is a friend. My standard answer is, plenty of people don’t like me either.
It’s true.
The reason? Well, they’re not my ideal customer.
Your ideal customer will mesh with your rules and expectations – if they do not, you have conflict and sometimes bad experiences. That’s why it’s so important to carefully identify your ideal customer from the start!
So where does this leave us?
Take the time to identify your ideal customer… think of the person you enjoy serving. The person that makes you want to unlock your door each day. What does this person do for a living, how do you find more of them, and more important, why do you like working with them?
At a minimum… they pay their bill. No sense in doing business with someone that doesn’t pay their bill, is a slow pay, or that you have to chase down to give you money.
When you determine your ideal customer you will never have a problem making a decision for products and services, all you have to do is say, “would customer X buy this?” – if no… then don’t carry it.
It really is that simple.
Your goal is to create that person that returns over and over… make “that person” one you really enjoy!
